To mark the final year of the World War One centenary, The Royal British Legion invited the public to take part in a movement to say ‘Thank You’ to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed, rebuilt and changed the nation.
In support of the Thank You movement, Newsome Ward Community Forum have placed a Silent Soldier on the land at Newsome crossroads.
Our soldier symbolises all of the British Legion’s “Silent Silhouettes”, which represent the communities who took part in World War One.
We are inviting you to remember the soldiers of World War One – you can find out about some of the men behind the names on local war memorials in our displays.
But also we’re remembering the families and communities who lived in a changing world – including those who campaigned for Votes for Women, and those who founded new organisations like the Women’s Institute.
They helped shape the nation as we know it today.
