The Ordinary Men Regimental Heritage Project

The 5th Duke of Wellington's regiment

Albert Beardsell from Newsome was just one of the many ‘ordinary men’ who served with the Huddersfield Territorials in the Great War. He gave his life fighting for his country at Thiepval, September 3rd 1916, but this is just one of many stories that can be told.

The Ordinary Men Regimental Heritage Project records the fate of all the men of the original Battalion who went to France in April 1915 and those who joined them as reinforcements as the war progressed. Information is also held on every man who mobilised with the Battalion on August 5th 1914.

If you have ancestors who served with the West Riding Regiment in the Great War (especially the 5th Battalion) we would like to hear from you. Perhaps you have photographs, medals or other artefacts that can be recorded to add to our archives.

Help and information can be provided if you are researching your ancestor’s story.

See our display at local events to find out more, or please contact us at any time.
